Narragansett Turkeys

When most people think of an all-American Thanksgiving turkey what their mind’s eye sees is a Narragansett. Named for the Narragansett Bay area of Rhode Island where it was developed the breed has deep American roots. Thought to have been developed from a cross between the turkeys English and European settlers brought to America beginning in the 1600s and Eastern Wild Turkeys, Narragansetts have held a place in the American Poultry Association’s Standard of Perfection since 1874.

Once the foundation of the New England turkey industry and favored for their meat qualities across the country, they have fallen out of favor on intensive, confinement farms as the use Broad-Breasted White turkeys, a heavily genetically selected strain that grows faster and bigger, has increased. They’re now considered threatened by the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy.

Hardy and what we like to call street-smart, Narragansetts thrive in pastured and free-range production systems, are known for their docile nature and exceptional brooding qualities. They’re also delicious!

We have both meat and, during certain times of year, started turkey poults available!
